Lily Diego has been saddened by Hurricane Katrina's lingering devastation while in New Orleans this week.
She and a fellow Lawrence Technological University graduate student are there through today to help efforts to rebuild part of the Lower 9th Ward, which is still struggling to recover from flood damage caused by the storm five years ago.
But I also was so impressed by the resilience and determination of the residents to come back" said Diego, 34, of Pleasant Ridge.
"I get to go home when this is over, while someone out there is waiting for their home to be built."
Diego and Kristin Bettis, 24, of Farmington Hills, are working on master's degrees in architecture, with a concentration in sustainability. They arrived in New Orleans on Monday equipped with a mobile design studio of 11 high-end computers to help actor Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation prepare to build 30 homes in quick succession.
They were accompanied by the assistant dean of Lawrence Tech's College of Architecture and Design, Ralph Nelson. The students analyzed architectural plans to determine materials needed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. They also crunched numbers to calculate costs of materials for the building blitz.
The Make It Right Foundation is grateful for their help.
"We determined a month ago that we needed a mobile design studio and some students, so we reached out to the university and they got it together amazingly quick," said Taylor Royle, foundation spokeswoman. "They've been our heroes."
Diego and Bettis have begun their days in New Orleans about 8 a.m. and stayed seated at their computers until around 7:30 each night.
"We brought the technology down here to do a large cost estimation to figure out how much the houses will cost," said Bettis. "That means figuring out the most cost-effective way to build the houses, including every single nut and bolt."
But Bettis said the project involves more than building homes. "It's also about bringing people back home, educating home owners and creating community," she said.
The part of the program involving the Lawrence Tech students ends today, and they return home Saturday.

Angelina Jolie's father shares his proud feelings for his six adorable grandkids

Just like grandparents all over the world, Jon Voight loves to brag about his grandkids! The 71-year-old actor couldn't be more proud of daughter Angelina Jolie's six children, and he's opening up about his feelings.
"They're all smart," the Oscar winner told People.com at Fox's Fall Eco-Casino Party in L.A. "Shiloh, oh boy, she's a smart one, but she's four years old, you can never tell what she does, her face lights up."
Voight -- who recently reconciled with Jolie after being estranged from her for years -- says he often keeps in touch with his family via Skype. Voight says he's trying to get the technological communication down, but sometimes there are glitches. "Maddox says 'okay' – he writes me back 'okay' and then I can't get it, but I've been away from my computer so I couldn't get back to him," Voight explains.
But the actor almost had a glitch himself when trying to remember all the kids' names! "I gotta get all their names, because you can't cheat and I'm not going to," he said. "Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne, they're all very smart kids, beautiful too."
Voight is currently busy promoting his new television show Lone Star. (Though it got the stamp of approval from Jolie, the actor says his young grandkids probably won't "be that interested in it.") But the proud gramps says he's looking forward to seeing the Jolie and Brad Pitt's little ones in person soon. "What's better than that?" he asked.
Do you think Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie have completely mended their relationship? Chime in below!

After logging long hours on work duties overseas, Angelina Jolie was spotted gearing up for a flight out of Budapest, Hungary on Saturday (September 18).
On her way to the airport, the "Changeling" actress decided to treat daughters Shiloh and Zahara to a few toys at a local mall before boarding their outbound flight.
While Shiloh was pictured holding a wooden sword, a big bag of toys were transported to the car as the three lovely ladies readied for their trip back to the States.
Finally making it back home, Ang and her two darlings were escorted through LAX Airport as they loaded into an awaiting ride for the final leg of their journey.
In related news, actor/director Clint Eastwood recently spoke to press about advice he has for Miss Jolie.
He tells People magazine, “My advice for her is to get more sleep than the actors. And to have good management – know what you want and know what you are looking for and go after it.”
Enjoy the pictures of Angelina Jolie with Shiloh and Zahara arriving at LAX and leaving Budapest (September 18).

Jolie joins men on Action Hero list
(UKPA) – 2 hours ago
Angelina Jolie has become the only woman to be voted one of the Top 10 Ultimate Action Heroes Of All Time.
The Oscar-winning star of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and recent action spy thriller Salt was ranked alongside Hollywood hardmen including Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger following the survey conducted by online sports nutrition brand www.myprotein.com.
Angelina only made it to number seven with two per cent of the vote, but she was the only woman in the top ten, which was headed by tough guy Stallone.
The 64-year-old star of Rocky, Rambo and The Expendables scooped 31 per cent of the vote and beat Terminator star Schwarzenegger, who came second with 24 per cent.
Die Hard's Bruce Willis, who made a cameo along with Schwarzenegger in Sly's action movie homage The Expendables, was third with 15 per cent, and martial arts legend Bruce Lee was fourth. Jean Claude Van Damme rounded off the top five.
Steven Seagal was voted into sixth place, while Chuck Norris, Will Smith and Jason Statham all finished behind Angelina in the poll, with less than one per cent of the vote each.
Almost 2,000 British men and women took part in the poll to vote for their ultimate action hero.

This project only gets more interesting.
According to the Croatian outlet, Dalje (via The Playlist), Angelina Jolie has found her lead for her upcoming directorial debut, the recently announced Bosnian War love story. The outlet is reporting that relative unknown Zana Marjanovic has been cast as the film’s lead, joining Rade Serbedzija as the film’s sole cast at this point.
The film is apparently a “love story set during the Bosnian War, the film focuses on a Serbian Man and a Bosnian woman who meet on the eve of the war and the effect the war has on their relationship.” Sounds amazing to me. Check out the rest of the story after the break.
Jolie has stated that she wants to cast the film entirely with actors from the region, and this definitely fits that bill. Also, I think it makes the film far more interesting. Sure, the film could star any collection of Hollywood A-listers, but that doesn’t seem the type of film Jolie truly wants to make here, and for good reason. The film seems to have inherent emotional and narrative weight, and coming from Jolie, a person who relatively knows the area, it couldn’t be more interesting to me.

We are not sure whether this one is again a rumor like the one where Angelina Jolie was said to be playing the role of legendary actress Marilyn Monroe. But the buzz is that a movie is being planned to be produced in Cambodia. The announcement was made on Wednesday in Phnom Pehn, by proposed the movie’s project manager Thomas Magyar and the project co-coordinator Tony Schiena. The title of the film is ‘Great Khmer Empire”.
The duo announced that it will be a massive and exhausting project as they will have to consult the Cambodian government and historians to gather accurate history. The film will take almost three years for making and it will cost approximately U.S. $ 70 million.
Schiena and Magyar stated that apart from Jolie they are looking into other famous stars those who can be part of the project. They have in mind the Chinese action hero Jet Li, John Cena of the World Wrestling entertainment and Song Hye Kyo a famous South Korean movie actress. It is likely to be a historical film focusing on the history of Cambodia during the reign of King Jayavarman the VII at 11th and 12th century. It is during this time the Angkor Wat Temple of Cambodia was built.
Angelina Jolie has previously shot her film ‘Lara Croft: The Tomb Raider’ at the Siem Reap province that also has the famous Angkor Wat Temple. She also adopted her eldest son Maddox from Cambodia and was also given Cambodian citizenship for her conservation work there. Vancouver author wants another book contract, but he’s also out to save the tiger
Tom Hawthorn — From Thursday's Globe and Mail Published on Wednesday, Sep. 22, 2010 10:22PMJohn Vaillant, a 48-year-old Vancouver author, stalks the progress of his new book as it is distributed across the continent.
He is promoting his remarkable The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival (Knopf, $34.95).
After years or preparation it is now time for the public to pass judgment. How much does he have riding on the book?. “Everything,” he said........So far, the reception for the book has been solid, the reviews rapturous. The Tiger is No. 2 on The Globe’s bestsellers list.
The movie rights have been optioned by Brad Pitt.
A movie, especially a successful one, cannot help but move books. The more books sold, likely the more money raised to preserve the Asian forests in which the tigers live.
How ironic. The success of a book of significant literary merit may depend on Hollywood.http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/tom-hawthorn/year-of-the-tiger-to-the-power-of-three/article1719733/
